SMC initiates campaign against plastic carry bags in Siliguri, Rs 500 fine imposed on several businessmen

Siliguri, 7th October: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has once again launched a campaign against plastic carry bags before Durga Puja in Siliguri. It has to be noted that, despite the ban, plastic carry bags are in use at vegetable, fruit, fish markets, and grocery stores. Customers are being given goods in plastic carry bags.

As per reports, on Saturday, SMC Officials launched a campaign at the Fuleswari market and a fine of Rs 500 was imposed on several businessmen. In addition, plastic carry bags were seized during this campaign. During this time, the businessmen expressed their anger over the fine.

According to the businessmen, plastic carry bags are being sold by the larger business establishments at many places in the city. From there, the carry bags come for use at the smaller stores. In this regard, the businessmen questioned why no action is being taken against larger establishments and plastic carry bag manufacturers.

During the SMC’s campaign, a dispute surfaced between the businessmen and the workers of the municipal corporation. Later, the situation was normalized upon police intervention. Sources revealed that the campaign would continue to ban the use of plastic carry bags in various markets of the city before the Puja.
