Siliguri, 29th August: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) conducted a drive across different areas of the city on Saturday to curb violations related to hygiene and construction. The drive began from Sevoke Road under the leadership of the Municipal Commissioner.
During the drive, several individuals were fined for allegedly leaving garbage and waste in front of their houses and shops.
The team then inspected the ‘Makhan Bhog’ sweets manufacturing unit on Sevoke Road, where multiple irregularities were reportedly found. According to the SMC, dead insects were found in the ghee being used to prepare sweets. Following the findings, the civic authorities immediately sealed the manufacturing unit.
The authorities of the manufacturing unit were also instructed to submit all necessary documents to the SMC and were informed that a substantial fine would be imposed.
The Municipal Corporation team later conducted an inspection at an under-construction multi-storey building in Punjabi Para. The authorities concerned allegedly failed to produce valid construction documents during the inspection.
The SMC also found a large quantity of stagnant water in the underground area of the building, which could increase the risk of dengue. The construction company was subsequently fined ₹1 lakh.
According to the SMC, such drives will continue across the city in the coming days to prevent violations related to hygiene and construction.
