Siliguri, 29th May: The 51st board meeting of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation witnessed uproar on Friday over the use of the term “got up,” triggering a heated exchange inside the House. The situation escalated further, following which BJP councillors staged a walkout from the meeting.
The incident reportedly began during discussion over a motion moved by CPI(M) councillor Sardarindu Chakraborty regarding the Bagrakote railway ROB. Mayor Gautam Deb responded to the matter during the discussion.
The BJP alleged that although the railway ROB project is being executed, no acknowledgment or thanks was extended to the government. Following this, Opposition leader Amit Jain reportedly stood up and thanked the government, which was objected to by Sardarindu Chakraborty.
Chakraborty questioned the relevance of expressing thanks beyond the subject of the motion and termed it inappropriate. He asked why the government was being thanked without any specific reason, which further escalated tensions inside the meeting hall.
Subsequently, BJP councillors alleged that TMC and CPI(M) were “setting up” together. They also claimed that the phrase “got up” during the discussion triggered anger among CPI(M) councillors, further intensifying the situation.
Following the heated exchange, BJP councillors boycotted the board meeting and walked out in protest.
