Siliguri witnessed heavy traffic jams following the closure of Mahananda Bridge for repair works

Siliguri, 22nd February: The first Mahananda Bridge, starting today, has been closed by PWD for six days due to repair works. Massive vehicular traffic was witnessed on the second bridge this morning.
It is to be noted, in October of the previous year, the third pillar of Balasan Bridge was damaged following heavy rains for two days. After which questions were being raised on the negligence of the administrative officers in the maintenance of the bridges in the city.
Keeping this in mind, the PWD has geared up to renovate the Mahananda Bridge, which is the city’s central point. If the bridge gets damaged, traffic will come to a complete standstill. Therefore, PWD has initiated the repair work of the bridge starting today for six days. As per the order issued by the office, the traffic over the 1st Mahananda Bridge will be suspended for 6 days i.e. 22nd to 27th February from 5:00 am to 10:00 am. With the closure of the first bridge, a long queue of vehicles was witnessed over the second bridge while common people were spotted commuting on foot.
