Siliguri SOG strikes hard: 206 arrests made in 103 cases as drug trade and criminal activities face major setback

Siliguri, 02nd June: The Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police has made significant strides in curbing crime and drug trafficking in the city since its formation two years ago. Collaborating with various police stations from Siliguri to Malda, the SOG has successfully apprehended key players in the drug trafficking business, including notorious individuals such as Jabbar, Tamanna, Pushpa, and Jagdish Mandal.


Under the leadership of former Commissioner Gaurav Sharma, the establishment of the SOG has led to a series of crackdowns on criminal activities. Over the past two years, the SOG has registered 103 cases, resulting in the arrest of 206 individuals involved in illicit activities. Notably, the team has seized a staggering 47.29 kilograms of brown sugar, 1229 kilograms of cannabis, and 16,841 bottles of banned cough syrup.

In addition, the SOG has recovered 12,584 pieces of banned tablets, confiscated 9 firearms and 45 live rounds, and seized 800 litres of illegal spirit and 743 litres of illegal liquor. The group has also played a vital role in combating illegal call centres, arresting 135 individuals and dismantling 17 illegal operations. Moreover, their efforts have led to the recovery of a thousand-year-old stolen idol of Lord Vishnu.


The SOG has demonstrated its effectiveness in solving serious crimes, including the swift apprehension of a suspect involved in the rape and murder of a minor girl within the Pradhan Nagar Police Station’s jurisdiction near the Bhutan border. They have also made significant breakthroughs in cases involving the sale and theft of newborns, rescuing victims and arresting perpetrators in joint operations with the Detective Department (DD) and Matigara Police Station.

The group’s relentless pursuit of justice extends to other areas, such as recovering stolen bikes and apprehending wanted criminals. Fifteen stolen bikes were recovered from Chopra, leading to the arrest of two individuals, while four fugitives were apprehended at the Delhi-Haryana border. Furthermore, three individuals involved in theft were arrested within the jurisdiction of the Bhaktinagar Police Station.

During their operations, the SOG has managed to seize a total of INR 25,31,540 in illicit funds. ADCP Subhendra Kumar of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police expressed satisfaction with the impact of the SOG, stating that their efforts have significantly curbed drug trafficking and criminal activities, bolstering the capabilities and reach of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police.
