Siliguri, 20th November: In a significant development, a man from Uttar Pradesh was caught carrying nearly ₹30 lakh in cash at Hashmi Chowk on Wednesday night. The incident came to light when a civic volunteer stopped him for ignoring a traffic signal.
The man, riding a scooty with a bag full of cash, left the vehicle on the road and entered a tea shop, which raised suspicion among police officers. Traffic police later apprehended him and discovered the huge sum inside the bag.
The accused, Mohammad Wasim, could not provide any documents or legal explanation for the money. Reports indicate he had rented the scooty in Siliguri to deliver the cash to another person but was intercepted before completing the handover.
Siliguri police have launched an investigation to trace the source of the cash.
