Siliguri cops arrest groom from wedding mandap

Siliguri, 09th June: A bridegroom was arrested from the wedding venue on the charge of getting married for the second time without a divorce. It is to be noted, under Section 494 of the Indian Penal Code, if a person marries a second time, without a divorce, while their spouse is alive, the marriage is considered bigamy, which is a punishable offense.

Reportedly, Rajeev Kumar, a resident of the Champasari area of Ward No. 46 of Siliguri, reached a bhawan on Burdwan Road along with his baraatis to his wedding. But instead of his in-laws, he was received by a team of cops from Women Police Station of Siliguri Metropolitan Police who was called by his first wife.

As per the information, Rajeev works in an insurance company and is well established in his career. In December 2019, he married a woman from Bardhaman. Soon after, Rajeev allegedly started seeing another woman from Assam by falsely identifying himself as a bachelor. He then fixed his marriage with the woman for a hefty dowry amount and called the family of the bride to Siliguri for the wedding.

Apparently, the family nor the woman had any clue about Rajeev’s first wife. His malicious plan was almost accomplished until his legal wife, just like in a classic Bollywood scene, called in the cops to arrest him. She lodged a complaint at Siliguri Women Police Station and accused Rajeev Kumar of marrying another woman without informing nor divorcing her. The police presented Rajeev in Siliguri court today by registering a criminal and cheating case. As per the primary interrogation, Rajeev Kumar confessed to opting for the second marriage in the greed for money. Police are probing the whole matter thoroughly.
