Siliguri, 12th July: Residents of the Telipara area under Dabgram-II Anchal are facing severe hardship due to persistent drainage problems, with even light rainfall causing drains to overflow and inundate homes with filthy water and garbage.
According to residents, the overflowing drains have become a recurring problem during the monsoon. They said one particular house is the worst affected, as water that enters the premises has no outlet, leaving it trapped for long periods. Family members are forced to wade through contaminated water to enter or leave their home, and the problem continues even after the monsoon season ends.
Residents said children are among the worst affected by the unhygienic conditions. Several family members have reportedly fallen ill with ailments such as diarrhea and skin infections after coming into contact with the polluted water. The stagnant water has also led to a sharp increase in mosquito breeding, raising further health concerns.
Residents alleged that despite repeatedly informing the Panchayat and the Pradhan about the issue, no effective action has been taken. They claimed that large quantities of thermocol and other waste are regularly dumped into the drain near Naresh More, clogging the drainage channel and preventing the free flow of water.
Responding to the allegations, the Pradhan said the Panchayat has already assessed the situation and initiated steps to clean the clogged drain. She added that arrangements are being made to dispose of waste from the Dabgram-II Anchal at a designated dumping ground. She also added that, discussions on the issue have also been held with the local MLA to find a long-term solution.
