Siliguri, 25th August: The Brihattar Rajbanshi-Kamtapuri Samaj staged a protest in Siliguri on Tuesday against allegedly derogatory comments made on social media targeting women from the Rajbanshi-Kamtapuri community and insulting remarks about the kings and rulers of Cooch Behar. The organisation demanded the immediate arrest and strict punishment of those responsible.
The protest march began from the Surya Sen Park area and passed through various parts of the city before reaching the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO). A delegation subsequently submitted a memorandum to the SDO.
Members of the organisation said that offensive and disrespectful comments on social media not only hurt a particular community but also threaten social harmony. They demanded swift legal action against those allegedly involved in the incident.
According to the organisation, similar protest programmes are also being held across North Bengal over the same demands.
