Prime accused arrested in Gaudiya Math theft case in Siliguri

Siliguri, 04th June: Police have arrested the prime accused in connection with the theft at Gaudiya Math located in Deshbandhu Para, marking a major breakthrough in the case.

The accused, identified as Raju Barman, was arrested by Siliguri Police Station from the Mahabirsthan area following a targeted operation based on specific intelligence inputs.

According to police, the theft took place on the night of 21 May, when 22 Gopal idols, a large brass bell, and other valuable religious items were stolen from the premises.

Following a complaint, an FIR was registered and investigation was launched. Within 24 hours of the incident, police had already arrested three accused, Prasenjit Sarkar, Dilip Sarkar, and Piyal Sarkar, and recovered the stolen items based on their statements.

However, the prime accused had remained absconding until his arrest. Police said a special operation was conducted to trace and apprehend him.

The accused has been produced before the court, and police have sought remand for further interrogation. Investigation into the case is continuing, with efforts underway to identify any other possible involvement.
