Siliguri, 30th April: The 50th board meeting of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation witnessed brief political tension after heated discussions erupted over the SIR issue.
Mayor Gautam Deb, Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar, Chairman Pratul Chakraborty, along with councillors from various parties, were present at the meeting.
The atmosphere turned tense for a while when the SIR issue was raised, prompting BJP councillors to leave the meeting hall. However, they clarified that it was not a walkout but a pre-scheduled departure taken with prior permission.
Several key issues were discussed in detail during the meeting. Special emphasis was laid on improving the city’s drainage system and civic services in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mayor Gautam Deb said that multiple development projects will be initiated in the city after May 6. He added that focus will be on overall development and strengthening civic amenities in Siliguri.
