Siliguri, 05th July: A voluntary organization has objected to the open display and sale of meat at Haiderpara Market in Siliguri, particularly in view of the upcoming Rath Yatra and Ulto Rath celebrations.
On Sunday, members of the organization submitted a memorandum to the Haiderpara Market Traders’ Association, alleging that meat continues to be cut and sold openly at several shops in the market hanging in plain view. They claimed the practice violates the regulations of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
According to the organization, municipal norms and hygiene standards require meat to be sold within designated enclosures screened with dark glass. They argued that proper enforcement of these rules would help maintain cleanliness, protect public health and prevent the open display of meat.
The organization also highlighted that several Rath Yatra processions are scheduled to pass along Haiderpara Main Road on July 16. During the processions, prasad will be distributed to devotees from the chariots. Members expressed concern that prasad could accidentally fall onto meat hanging openly near the roadside, which they said could hurt religious sentiments.
The organization urged the authorities to treat the issue with seriousness and take immediate action. It also appealed to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation to conduct regular inspections and strictly enforce existing municipal regulations.
Responding to the memorandum, the Haiderpara Market Traders’ Association said it would examine the allegations and demands carefully. The association added that, if necessary, it would hold discussions with the concerned traders and take appropriate steps to ensure business operations comply with municipal rules.
