No gathering on Tagore’s birth anniversary in Siliguri due to Corona scare

Siliguri, 08th May: Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the citizens of Siliguri celebrated the birth anniversary of the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore on a low key. No big celebrations or gatherings were allowed to stop community transmission of the virus.


State Tourism Minister Goutam Deb, Mayor Ashok Bhattacharya, and Trinamool District President Ranjan Sarkar, on Friday morning, garlanded the statue of Tagore at Rabindra Mancha in Siliguri Baghajatin Park. Apart from them, SMC Mayor-in-council Shankar Ghosh, Borough Chairman Nikhil Sahani, and many other dignitaries were present during the event. However, no stage and music programmes were reported to be held.

Celebrated annually and globally in May, Rabindra Jayanti falls on the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh. Tagore was born on the day in the year 1268, according to the Bengali calendar.
