Siliguri, 14th May: NJP police arrested a theft accused who had allegedly gone to Varanasi after committing the crime. Based on information obtained during police remand, police recovered nearly Rs 3.7 lakh in cash along with gold ornaments from the accused.
Addressing a press conference, DCP Rana Mukherjee said police had solved the theft case reported on 20th April at the residence of Chandan Saha in the Sitalapara area under NJP police station. The main accused, identified as Deepak Das, was arrested in connection with the incident.
According to reports, Chandan Saha had withdrawn a large amount of money from the bank and kept it at home. Taking advantage of the night while the family was asleep, the accused allegedly entered the house and fled with lakhs of rupees in cash and around nine bhori of gold ornaments.
Following the incident, police intensified the investigation using CCTV footage and other sources and arrested the accused on 10th May. During interrogation, it was revealed that after committing the theft, the accused first travelled to Digha via Kolkata and later went to Varanasi, where he allegedly took a holy dip in the Ganga. Police arrested him after he returned to Siliguri and recovered the stolen items from his possession.
DCP Mukherjee further stated that large-scale installation of CCTV cameras will be carried out across Siliguri before the upcoming festive season to strengthen security arrangements in the city. Survey work for the project is currently underway.
