Newborn dies in Siliguri District Hospital, family alleges doctor’s negligence

Siliguri, 28th November: Tension ensued in the Siliguri District Hospital after a newborn died. Reportedly, Kalpana Mandal, the pregnant wife of Jhantu Mandal, a resident of Devidanga, Champasari, was admitted to Siliguri District Hospital on Thursday. It is alleged that after admitting her on Thursday, the doctor did not come to visit her for a check-up.

Despite the serious condition of Kalpana Mandal and continuous requests by the relatives, the doctor on duty in the maternity department allegedly did not take any necessary action. Then on Friday, the nurses tried to deliver the baby naturally, but when that failed, another doctor opted for a cesarean and operated Kalpana. However, the newborn died last night.

After the incident, Jhantu Mandal lodged a complaint to the hospital superintendent and Siliguri police station alleging negligence on the part of the doctor. In this regard, Hospital Superintendent Dr. Chandan Ghosh said that he received a complaint and the case has been informed to the District Chief Health Officer. He further assured to look into all the matters and take proper action.
