DRI Siliguri Unit seizes 8,200 bottles of banned cough syrup worth around ₹82 lakh from potato-laden truck; two arrested

Siliguri, 19th August: The Siliguri unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 8,200 bottles of banned cough syrup, estimated to be worth around ₹82 lakh, from a goods truck near the Fulbari-Ghoshpukur toll plaza under Phansidewa Police Station. The truck driver and co-driver were arrested in connection with the seizure.

The arrested accused have been identified as Mohiuddin, 31, and Mohammad Arif, 30. Both are residents of Uttar Pradesh.

According to information, the cough syrup was allegedly being transported from Howrah concealed beneath sacks of potatoes. Based on specific information, the DRI Siliguri Unit intercepted the suspected truck near the Fulbari-Ghoshpukur toll plaza on Wednesday and conducted a search.

During the search, the team allegedly recovered the cough syrup concealed underneath the potato sacks.

DRI counsel Ratan Banik said 8,200 bottles of banned cough syrup were recovered from the truck, with an estimated market value of around ₹82 lakh. According to him, the consignment was allegedly being transported from Howrah through Siliguri and Assam to Meghalaya.

The two accused were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and produced before a Siliguri court on Wednesday. After the hearing, the court sent both accused to 14 days of judicial custody.
