Darjeeling, 23rd October: Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, in a press release, expressed deep anger and sorrow over the tragic rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl in the Indo-Bhutan border region of Jaigaon, under Alipurduar District. The incident, he said, reflects the failure of the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to ensure public safety, particularly for children.
Bista highlighted the growing outrage among local residents, who are demanding justice. While one suspect has been arrested, two more remain at large.
In a statement, Bista expressed shock at the deployment of a large police force two kilometers from the victim’s house, preventing elected public representatives, comprising of opposition MPs, MLAs, and local Panchayat members, from meeting the family.
He questioned what the police were trying to conceal by blocking access to the victim’s family and suggested that the police were acting on orders from high-ranking officials in the state government.
Bista criticized the Mamata Banerjee government for prioritizing politics over public safety, fostering a culture of lawlessness that has emboldened criminals. He condemned the increasing crimes against women and children under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime, accusing the government of protecting criminals, either directly or indirectly.
The MP vowed to continue the fight for justice, stating that he and his colleagues will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice. He called for unity in demanding accountability and safety for the people of Dooars, Terai, and Hills. He reiterated his commitment stating that despite being stopped by the adminisitration today, he would be monitoring the matter closely.
