Jalpaiguri, 06th October: Tragedy befell following the explosion of a mortar shell carried by the floodwaters of the Teesta River resulting in the death of an individual and injury to several others in the Jalpaiguri district. The deceased has been identified as Sahinur Alom.
According to reports, the incident took place, on Thursday, in Kranti block under the Chapadanga Gram Panchayat of Jalpaiguri when the deceased lifted the mortar shell out of curiosity.
It has to be noted that the disastrous Sikkim flood has left the hills and plains along Teesta in terrible shape. Following a cloudburst and flash floods in Sikkim, numerous buildings, automobiles, and other items were washed away by the floodwaters streaming down the hills. Several people along the Teesta River bank are collecting the tree trunks, gas cylinders, and mortar shells and taking them home.
