Mirik set for ₹100 crore tourism makeover with lake beautification and adventure attractions

Siliguri, 05th July: The West Bengal government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform Mirik into a world-class tourism destination through a development project worth around ₹100 crore in its first phase. The initiative aims to enhance the town’s tourism infrastructure with the beautification of Mirik Lake and the introduction of new adventure and recreational attractions.

State Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh said that the Detailed Project Report for the project has already been prepared. Work is expected to begin after financial approval and fund allocation are received from the Central Government. He added that once the first phase is completed, additional phases with larger investments will further revamp Mirik.

A long-favoured destination for domestic and international travellers, Mirik is known for its scenic lake, rolling green hills, tea gardens, orange orchards, and peaceful surroundings. The proposed project seeks to build on this appeal by developing modern tourism infrastructure and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

According to the plan, the project will include the beautification of Mirik Lake, improved tourist amenities, adventure sports facilities, nature trails, viewpoint development, recreational activities, and the creation of new attractions. Officials believe these initiatives will not only attract more visitors but also create fresh economic opportunities for local businesses, hotels, transport operators, and small entrepreneurs.

Shankar Ghosh said the state government is committed to strengthening tourism across North Bengal. Along with unlocking Mirik’s tourism potential, efforts are also underway to further establish Darjeeling as an internationally recognised tourism destination.

The Tourism Department stated that once implemented, the project will position Mirik as a leading destination for adventure, nature, and experiential tourism, while providing a significant boost to North Bengal’s tourism sector and generating new employment opportunities for local residents.
