Mirik, 05th July: Two men have been arrested in connection to the murder of a 48-year-old woman of Okaity Tea Garden. The arrested have been identified as Govind Lakhotia and Avinash Chhetri.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Kurseong Manoranjan Das maintained that the killing of Tara Chettri appears to be a result of bad business deal. Apparently, Govind Lakhotia owns a furniture shop and a few days ago, the deceased and Lakhotia had an altercation regarding monetary transactions. It has been presumed that the fight escalated and eventually led to the drastic event. Meanwhile, the locals of Okaity staged a protest in front of the police station, on Tuesday, demanding severe punishment for the culprits.
It is to recall, Tara Chettri, a resident of School Dara area under Ward No. 03 of Mirik's Okaity Tea Garden, was brutally murdered and thrown under her bed on Sunday night. She lived with her 09-year-old granddaughter, who was also present at the time of the incident. The girl was gagged, her hands tied and was shut inside a divan bed by the two men. The heinous crime only came to light the following morning after the girl somehow managed to escape and run for help.
