Siliguri, 12th August: Medical Outpost police have arrested a suspected member of an ATM fraud gang and recovered 19 fake ATM cards from his possession. The arrested accused has been identified as Jagannath Gharami, a resident of Baruipur.
According to police, Mukhtar Hussain, a ward master at Siliguri Medical College, went to an ATM to withdraw money when the accused allegedly approached him on the pretext of helping him. The accused reportedly swapped his genuine ATM card with a fake one.
Shortly afterwards, around ₹26,000 was withdrawn from Hussain’s bank account, following which he lodged a complaint with the police.
During the investigation, police received information that members of the gang were preparing to carry out another crime near an ATM at BSF More in Kadamtala. Police launched an operation and arrested Jagannath Gharami, while some of his associates reportedly fled the spot.
Police have registered a case against the accused and launched a search for the other members of the gang.
Siliguri Metropolitan Police ACP Anirban Majumdar said Medical Outpost police had arrested a member of the ATM fraud gang and recovered 19 fake ATM cards from his possession. He described the action as a major crackdown on the ATM fraud gang and said a detailed investigation is underway.
