Siliguri, 06th August: Matigara Police have arrested three women for allegedly stealing clothes from a garment shop in Patiram Jote by posing as customers. Police have also recovered the stolen clothes from their possession.
The arrested women have been identified as Purnima Das (55), Dipali Dey (50) and Sabita Sarkar (48), all residents of Kawakhali Bazaar area.
According to police sources, the three women had visited a garment shop in Patiram Jote under Matigara Police Station area on Wednesday evening posing as customers. While pretending to shop, they allegedly diverted the shopkeeper’s attention and fled with clothes worth around ₹7,000 to ₹10,000 along with around ₹1,000 in cash.
The theft came to light when the shopkeeper checked the stock after the women left. Following this, a written complaint was lodged at Matigara Police Station.
Based on the complaint, police started an investigation and identified the accused women with the help of CCTV footage and sources. Later, police received information that the three women had reached Paribahan Nagar area to sell the stolen clothes.
Acting on the information, police conducted an operation and arrested the three women. During the search, the stolen clothes were recovered from their possession.
Police have registered a case against the three women under relevant sections and produced them before the Siliguri court on Thursday.
