Man dies in Police custody in Matigara: Situation under control after two days

Siliguri, 28th February: An atmosphere of tension was being witnessed in Matigara, since Wednesday, over the incident of the death of a man in police custody. The locals staged a protest on the Mahananda Bridge near Thakkar in Matigara, on Thursday, by burning tyres.


However, the situation slowly cooled down, on Friday, and Bechan Roy was cremated at the Kiran Chandra Burning Ghat, today morning.

As per the report, the Matigara Police had taken Bechan Roy to the police station, on Wednesday afternoon, on the charges of selling liquor illegally. However, later in the evening, the family members of Roy were informed that Roy fell ill. He was taken to the Matigara Block Hospital, where he died. Rahul Roy, the son of Bechan Roy, alleged that his father was beaten to death by the police. However, the police have stated that Roy died due to illness.
