Man arrested following his father’s arrest in connection with Siliguri Head Post Office job scam case

Siliguri, 27th December: In another significant breakthrough in the Siliguri Head Post Office job scam case, a man was arrested by the police, following his father’s arrest. The arrested accused has been identified as Amit Kumar.


Earlier, on June 14, 2022, a job scam assuring Group D job in Siliguri Head Post Office, came to light after an individual lodged a complaint at the Matigara police station.

During a detailed investigation, the police gained significant information regarding an individual named Surya Bali, a high official working in Siliguri Head Post Office from 2016 to 2020, who allegedly misused his position and demanded Rs 12 lakh in exchange for providing jobs on six Group D posts at the said Post Office.


During this, a deal was allegedly made between the parties where half of the payment was to be made in advance and the remaining amount later. Surya demanded the individuals to transfer the money to his son’s bank account. However, despite making the payments, the victims were not provided with the promised jobs. Subsequently, a complaint was filed against Surya Bali in the police station.

According to information received from police sources, Surya Bali is accused of fraud worth Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of providing jobs. During further investigation, Surya Bali, who was later transferred to the Main Post Office of Howrah, was arrested on August 16, 2022, and brought to Siliguri. Following this, Surya Bali’s son Amit Kumar’s name surfaced and the police initiated a hunt to apprehend him.

As investigations progressed, the police discovered that the accused Amit Kumar was already arrested and was in jail in Uttar Pradesh state, in connection with another criminal offense.

Later, a petition was filed in Siliguri Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court, where, the court directed the UP Police to transfer accused Amit Kumar to Siliguri on January 2023.

Reportedly, after the completion of the legal process, as per the instructions of Siliguri ACJM court, Uttar Pradesh Police handed over the accused to Matigara police station on Sunday. Currently, after presenting the accused in the Siliguri court, the police took the accused on a 7-day remand for further investigation.
