Siliguri, 12th January: The Siliguri DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) unit seized a large quantity of foreign cigarettes from Fulbari and arrested an individual in connection with the case. The arrested person has been identified as Mohammad Zulfiqar (49), a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
According to information, the DRI team received a tip-off about a consignment of foreign cigarettes being smuggled through Siliguri from Assam. Acting on this information, the DRI team set up an operation near the Fulbari-Ghoshpukur bypass on Friday and stopped a truck on suspicion. Upon searching the vehicle, they found several cartons containing 5,80,000 pieces of foreign cigarettes.
Upon being asked for the necessary documents for the cigarettes, the driver failed to produce any. The seized cigarettes are valued at approximately ₹58 lakh in the market. The accused has been presented in Siliguri Court, and the DRI is continuing its investigation into the matter.
