Rajganj, 16th May: A controversy has erupted after local residents alleged that Trinamool Congress candidate Swapna Barman and her family deliberately set fire to their own house to gain public sympathy.
According to information, a fire broke out at Swapna Barman’s old house on Friday night. Police and fire brigade teams reached the spot after receiving the alert, but by then the fire had already been brought under control.
Following the incident, Swapna Barman became active on social media and wrote, “If I had known this would happen, I would not have entered politics. Entering politics was my mistake.”
However, on Saturday morning, local residents and neighbours strongly countered her claims, alleging that Swapna Barman and her two brothers themselves set fire to the old house. They claimed the act was intended to gain sympathy.
Locals further alleged that neither Swapna Barman nor her family had a reputation for good behaviour in the area and accused her of misusing influence. They also claimed she used to threaten to call the Chief Minister and police over minor issues.
A relative of Swapna Barman also reportedly stated that she used to interact with people earlier, but after winning a gold medal, she no longer recognizes anyone.
