Leopard carcass recovered in NH-55

Siliguri, 11th November: Sensation prevailed after the carcass of a leopard was recovered on NH-55 near Kokalam Bit under the Sukna Forest Department of Mahananda Sanctuary.


Reportedly, the locals sighted the carcass, this morning and immediately informed the Sukna Forest Department. Upon receiving the news, the forest workers reached the spot and recovered the body.

The forest workers primarily assumed that the leopard, while crossing the road, was hit by a vehicle.


Mriganka Maity, an official of the Sukna Forest Department, said that in order to prevent such incidents, the forest department has put up ‘Drive Slow’ notice boards at several places. Also, continuous patrolling is being carried out. The forest department has also started an investigation into the incident under the Wildlife Act.
