Jalpaiguri man loses ₹1.06 lakh to online fraud while buying earrings

Jalpaiguri, 21st April: A man from Jalpaiguri became a victim of online fraud, losing ₹1.06 lakh after attempting to buy earrings from a website. The incident occurred in two phases, resulting in a significant financial loss.

According to reports, Bappai Sarkar, a resident of Raikat Para, lodged a complaint with the Jalpaiguri Cyber Police Station on Monday. He explained that on April 13, he had ordered four sets of earrings from an online website. However, when the order was delivered to his home on April 20, only one earring was received instead of the four sets he had ordered.

Upon contacting the toll-free number provided by the website, Bappai was instructed to download an app. After following the instructions, Bappai noticed that ₹98,000 was first deducted from his account, followed by an additional ₹8,000.

Based on Bappai’s complaint, the police have launched an investigation into the fraud.
