Is Kanchenjunga Stadium safe? Epicentre for sports enthusiasts turns dark as soon as dusk sets

Siliguri, 14th January: Siliguri’s Kanchenjunga Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium used primarily for cricket and football matches. With a long and glorious history, the stadium is an epicentre for sports enthusiasts spread across the city. Owing to this, under the initiative of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, the renovation work of the stadium in Siliguri has been started. However, on the other hand, as soon as it gets dark, the stadium takes a dark form and anti-social activities prevail on the premises; all of which raise questions about the security system.

While the stadium is packed with sports and fitness enthusiasts in the morning, however, the entire area, starting from the ‘mela’ ground of the stadium to its multigym area, remains deserted in the evening. Earlier, when it also served as a hostel, the stadium used to be lively in the evening too. Whereas now, since there is no hostel, it has become a hub for anti-social activities. Bottles of liquor are always found lying inside the gallery adjacent to gate numbers 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 and 06.

In this context, Kuntal Goswami, General Secretary of Siliguri Mahakuma Krira Parishad (SMKP), said that this type of menace will not be tolerated and asserted to look into the matter at the earliest. He further added that the matter will be reported to the administration and Siliguri Municipal Corporation. On the other hand, sports enthusiast Anoop Basu urged the city Mayor to retain the security system of the stadium.

On the other hand, Mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation Goutam Deb said that arrangements are being made for tightening security by constructing a boundary wall and installing CCTV cameras. “Strict action will be taken on all sporadic incidents happening around the stadium,” the Mayor added.
