Siliguri, 31st July: The Income Tax Department has started strict action against taxpayers in Siliguri with long-pending tax dues amounting to crores of rupees.
As part of its tax recovery drive on Friday, the department attached a flat at Lumina Apartment in Uttorayon Township, Matigara, registered in the name of Om Prakash Jaiswal and his wife Soni Jaiswal. A property attachment notice was also pasted at the main entrance of the flat.
According to Income Tax Department officials, the Jaiswal couple has pending income tax dues of around ₹3.5 crore for nearly 10 years. Despite several notices issued by the department, no satisfactory steps were taken to clear the outstanding amount.
Following this, the department initiated legal proceedings under the tax recovery process and identified their properties for attachment.
Officials stated that if the pending tax amount is not paid within one month, the attached property will be auctioned to recover government revenue.
The department added that this was not the first such action against the taxpayer. Around a month ago, another flat registered in Jaiswal’s name was also attached. The Siliguri Income Tax unit has reportedly attached properties worth more than ₹20 crore during the last one month.
