Incessant rainfall submerges Tufanganj in Cooch Behar, residents fear flooding

Cooch Behar, 14th July: The persistent rainfall in the plains and hills has resulted in widespread inundation of Tufanganj, as the Raidak River surged due to overnight showers. This natural calamity has instilled fear among the local residents living along the riverbanks and within the town, who are anxious about the looming threat of a flood.

According to reports, the residents of Kamat Fulbari Booth No. 205 in Nakkagach Gram Panchayat, under Tufanganj Block-1, have sought refuge in safer locations and schools due to water entering their homes. The locals lament that the entire area gets submerged every year, even with a slight increase in rainfall, forcing them to seek shelter in other secure buildings. Despite repeatedly informing the Gram Panchayat Pradhan about the situation, no effective measures have been taken.

In response to the grievances, Leena Sen Sarkar, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Panchayat Member who recently won the elections from the aforementioned booth, stated that the formation of the Board authority is pending. Once the board is established, she plans to submit applications for the construction of embankments and roads.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the TMC of misusing the funds allocated by the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and Member of Parliament (MP). The party further alleges that the TMC is engulfed in a sea of corruption, which hampers their ability to identify areas for appropriate development.
