Siliguri, 03rd May: A bizarre case of goat theft using a vehicle (Scorpio) deployed for election duty has come to light in Siliguri during the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Plainclothes police from Pradhan Nagar police station arrested three youths in connection with the incident.
The accused have been identified as Tushar Roy alias Bob (25), Debjyoti Deb alias Jeet (21), and Krish Sil alias Raja (19), all residents of the Pradhan Nagar police station area.
According to reports, Sagar Gazmer, a resident of the Milan More Karaibari area, had lodged a written complaint regarding the theft of his goat. Acting on the complaint, police launched an investigation and identified the vehicle (Scorpio) (WB 73G 4141) using CCTV footage.
During the probe, police traced the vehicle’s owner, Gautam Paul, who stated that he had lent the car to his relative Tushar Roy. Tushar was later detained and during interrogation confessed to committing the theft along with his associates.
Based on his statement, police arrested the other two accused. Joint interrogation revealed that the trio had used the vehicle to carry out the crime. All three were produced before a Siliguri court.
Police have sought remand to recover the stolen goat and to track down any other accused involved.
Preliminary investigation suggests that substance abuse may have been a factor behind the crime. Further investigation is underway.
