Siliguri, 08th August: Bhakti Nagar Police arrested one person in connection with allegations of demanding ‘extortion money’ from the owner of a prominent pub on Siliguri’s Sevoke Road and threatening him. The accused, identified as Gopal Shil, was arrested from Raiganj and brought to Siliguri.
According to police sources, Vaseem Khan, business partner of pub owner Rahul Shaw, recently lodged a written complaint at Bhakti Nagar Police Station alleging a demand for ‘extortion money’, threats and other serious allegations.
The FIR names Gurpreet Singh Saluja, reportedly associated with the BJP, Bangiya Hindu Mahamancha’s Vikramaditya Mandal, Gopal Shil and Abhijit Ghosh.
Following the complaint, police began an investigation. After receiving information that Gopal Shil was in Raiganj, a police team conducted a raid there, arrested him and brought him to Siliguri.
The arrested accused was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Saturday, where police sought remand to question him about the alleged demand for money and other aspects of the incident.
Police are also searching for the other named accused, Gurpreet Singh Saluja, Vikramaditya Mandal and Abhijit Ghosh.
The complaint also mentions a meeting held at a restaurant on Sevoke Road on July 31, where Rahul Shaw was allegedly asked to pay ₹25 lakh immediately and another ₹25 lakh later, amounting to a total demand of ₹50 lakh.
The allegations will be established only after the completion of the investigation.
