Elephant herd damages maize fields in Gajoldoba, panic grips locals

Gajoldoba, 30th April: A herd of elephants, including calves, strayed into maize fields at Milanpally in Gajoldoba while searching for food, causing significant damage to crops and distress among local farmers.

The incident occurred on Thursday in the Teesta River bed area of Gajoldoba under the Belakoba Range of Baikunthapur forest. According to local sources, the herd emerged from the forest early in the morning and entered the maize fields. Around 40 elephants, including calves, are reportedly present in the area.

Even as the day progressed, the herd did not leave the fields, spreading panic across the locality. Farmers alleged that vast stretches of maize crops have been destroyed due to the elephant intrusion.

Locals claim that such incidents occur every year, as elephants descend from the forest and damage crops, leading to heavy financial losses for cultivators. This year too, the situation remains unchanged.

Forest officials from the Belakoba Range reached the spot after receiving information and have been conducting patrols to prevent the herd from entering residential areas and to guide them safely back into the forest.

Meanwhile, affected farmers have demanded a permanent solution to prevent recurring crop damage caused by elephant movements in the region.
