E-Rickshaw affecting the socio-economic condition of rickshaw pullers in Rajganj

Rajganj, 23rd August: A cycle rickshaw was a convenient means of travel since the early 1930s. However, in the present scenario, the battery-operated e-rickshaw, popularly known as toto, has become the most popular mode of public transport as an alternative to auto rickshaws and pulled rickshaws because of their low fuel cost, and less human effort compared to pulled rickshaws. Due to this, the rickshaw pullers are struggling to earn a living after totos gained more popularity in the city.

Rickshaw pullers in the Fulbari area said that even three years ago, paddle rickshaws were the only means to travel short distances. Earlier, a minimum of 50 rickshaws was spotted plying in the Fulbari area but now, with the advent of e-rickshaws, only a handful of human-powered rickshaws are seen.

Mojibar Rahman, a rickshaw puller, said that he has been a rickshaw puller for almost 50 years. But since the introduction of toto, rickshaws are no longer valued. Many rickshaw pullers have chosen an alternative way to earn a living. Like allowances are provided to needy people, Rahman demanded that rickshaw pullers should also be given financial assistance on behalf of the government.
