Drivers protest against the Centre’s new hit-and-run law in Siliguri

Siliguri, 03rd January: The drivers of Siliguri Indian Oil parked their vehicles and joined the protest against the new hit-and-run law of the Centre.

It is to be noted that the Central Government has come forward with a new hit-and-run law. The law states a 7 lakh rupees fine along with a jail term of 10 years, in case of an individual death caused by the drivers. This prompted the drivers to join a nationwide movement against the said laws. Later, on Tuesday night, the Centre’s decision on this new law was suspended.

Reportedly, given the previous announcement of the law, the drivers of Siliguri Indian Oil joined the agitation on Wednesday. During this, the drivers of Sikkim and Nepal were also present.

Subsequently, the drivers from Nepal and Sikkim agreed to drive at the request of the Indian Oil Authority. However, the drivers of NJP (New Jalpaiguri) continued their agitation.

In this regard, the protestors stated that further steps would be initiated based on the instructions of the senior leadership. Meanwhile, police from NJP police station have been deployed in the area since morning to prevent any untoward incident.
