Siliguri, 08th August: Siliguri Police arrested three youths for allegedly opening bank accounts in the names of financially vulnerable people by offering them money and using the accounts for illegal transactions.
The arrested accused have been identified as Chandrashekhar Das (22), Sonu Kumar Mahato (23) and Prithviraj Ghosh (21). All three are reportedly residents of Siliguri.
According to police sources, a plainclothes team from Siliguri Police Station conducted an operation in the SF Road area based on information received and arrested the three accused.
The accused allegedly approached people from rural areas and economically weaker sections by offering them money and collected their necessary documents. Bank accounts were subsequently opened in their names and allegedly used to conduct transactions involving money received from outside.
Police suspect that the bank accounts were being used for illegal financial activities. The arrested accused were produced before the Siliguri court on Saturday, following which police obtained four days’ remand.
Police are now conducting a detailed investigation and gathering information about the transactions linked to the bank accounts.
