DRI recovered gold worth Rs 8 crore from SUV near Panikauri, two arrested

Siliguri, 07th April: Gold worth Rs 8 crore was being smuggled from the SUV to Kolkata. The DRI team foiled the smuggling plan. Based on a tip-off, the DRI team seized 14 kg 281.500 grams of gold by conducting an operation near the Panikauri toll plaza of Fatapukur last night. Meanwhile, a woman and a man have been arrested on the charges of gold smuggling. The arrested accused have been identified as Mark Chingsianpaua, and Liangaihluni, both residents of Mizoram.


Reportedly, an SUV car bearing the number 12AB-6592 was heading from Mizoram to Siliguri via Assam toward Kolkata. But on a tip-off, the DRI team intercepted the SUV by conducting an operation near the Panikauri toll plaza of Fatapukur on Thursday. When the SUV was closely examined, 4 kg 281.500 grams of gold was recovered from the special chamber made in it. DRI seized gold along with the SUV for not showing documents related to gold. During this, both the accused were arrested.

DRI’s lawyer Trideep Saha told that yesterday, 13 pieces of gold were recovered from the SUV car by DRI by conducting a special operation near Panikauri toll. The weight of the said gold is said to be over 14 kg whose market value is said to be more than Rs 8 crore. The said gold was altered into smaller sizes from Mizoram and kept hidden in a special chamber of the SUV. The gold was about to be smuggled into Kolkata via Siliguri.
