Siliguri, 14th April: Ahead of the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the administration has stepped up security measures to ensure peaceful and fair polling on April 23. The district administration and police have intensified ground-level surveillance, remaining on high alert.
As part of the initiative, Harishanker Panicker, District Magistrate of Darjeeling, and Syed Waquar Raza, Commissioner of Siliguri Metropolitan Police, conducted a flag march in sensitive areas. The administrative team visited the Kholachand Fapri area of Matigara, where officials carried out a foot patrol to review the security arrangements.
During the visit, officials interacted directly with local residents to assess the polling atmosphere and gather information regarding any fear, pressure, or concerns. The District Magistrate urged citizens to exercise their democratic rights without fear, assuring them of comprehensive security. The Police Commissioner also reassured voters, stating that stringent security arrangements have been put in place to ensure a safe voting environment.
According to the administration, nearly 200 sensitive locations across Darjeeling and Siliguri have been identified. Special surveillance is being maintained in these areas, and additional security forces will be deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.
Officials further stated that continuous monitoring and visits will be conducted in vulnerable regions to instill confidence among voters. The Kholai Bakhri area of Matigara remains under special watch following recent incidents.
The district administration has appealed to all eligible voters to participate in large numbers in the polling scheduled for April 23, reinforcing the spirit of democracy.
