Darjeeling, 08th October: Darjeeling MP Raju Bista issued a press release detailing his recent visit to various areas within the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency that have been severely impacted by landslides in the Bijanbari-Rimbick-Lodhoma region.
During his observations along the road from Darjeeling to Bansbote, he noted numerous large and small landslides, expressing concern over the lack of action taken by the administration to clear the roads. This inaction has resulted in significant difficulties for local residents and daily travelers.
In Kainjaley bazar, Jhepi, Lower Lama Gaon, and surrounding areas, many homes, agricultural fields, temples, and roads have been destroyed. In Lodhoma, residents of Shanti Road are understandably worried about a massive crack that has developed above their village due to persistent rains.
MP Bista has communicated with administrative officials, requesting geo-technical and natural hazard studies be conducted by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to assess the stability of the area.
He cautioned that without timely intervention, the region could face a catastrophic event leading to significant loss of life, infrastructure, and property. If the area is determined to be unstable, he stressed the necessity for the State Government to take action to rehabilitate current residents, providing them with alternative lands and financial support for relocation.
MP Bista highlighted the economic importance of the Bijanbari valley, which is often referred to as the “food basket of Darjeeling,” producing healthy food items, including organic vegetables, millets, maize, and various mountain rice varieties.
He expressed shock that, despite the extensive destruction, the West Bengal Government has yet to provide relief and support to the victims. He also raised concerns about the administration’s conspicuous absence in addressing these urgent issues in this border area.
Further, he urged the district administration to compile a comprehensive list of landslides in the area, emphasizing the need to seek support from both the State and Central Governments to assist the landslide victims as soon as possible.
