Siliguri, 27th August: The CPI(M) has announced a series of demands, including rehabilitation of economically disadvantaged people who have been living on railway land for years before any eviction, improvement of civic services and immediate elections to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
On Thursday, CPI(M) supporters took out a march from Sevoke More and passed through various parts of the city before reaching the Siliguri Municipal Corporation’s Borough No. 2 office. A memorandum was also submitted at the borough office.
The party demanded that people who have been living on railway land for a long period should not be evicted without arrangements for their rehabilitation, describing such eviction as inhumane.
The CPI(M) also raised concerns over the deterioration of civic services in the city and demanded that the issues be addressed at the earliest.
In connection with these demands, the party has called for a march to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation on September 9.
