Jalpaiguri, 26th August: The Congress staged a protest march in Jalpaiguri on Wednesday against the rising prices of essential commodities, raising the slogan “Save People, Reduce Prices”. The protest march was organised by the Jalpaiguri Town Block Congress Committee at Dinbazar.
Congress leaders said the continuous rise in the prices of essential commodities, from sugar to onions, has created difficulties for the common people. They claimed that although the administration has formed a task force and launched drives to control price rises and prevent black marketing, the measures have not been sufficient.
Congress workers and leaders took out the march through the Dinbazar area. District Congress president Amit Bhattacharya, Town Block president Amlan Munshi and former district president Pinaki Sengupta were present during the protest.
During the march, Congress leaders visited several shops and spoke with traders about the prices of essential commodities.
Congress leaders targeted the BJP governments at the Centre and in the state, alleging that the measures taken by the administration through task force operations to control prices were merely an eyewash.
The Congress leadership warned that if the prices of essential commodities are not brought under control soon, the party will launch a larger movement in the coming days.
