Siliguri, 06th July: Tension erupted on Sevoke Road in Siliguri as city auto drivers staged a protest, leading to the suspension of auto services for an indefinite period.
The drivers alleged that unnumbered and unauthorized e-rickshaw (toto) vehicles have been operating on the route for a long time. They also claimed that totos without proper QR codes are freely plying on the roads despite repeated protests, with no permanent solution from the authorities.
The situation worsened after the suspension of toto services on Hill Cart Road, as those vehicles shifted to Sevoke Road and nearby areas. This, according to the drivers, has significantly reduced passenger numbers for city autos.
On Monday, city auto services were completely halted in areas including Fulbari, Salugara, Sevoke More, Venus More, and Court More, as drivers joined the protest.
The protesting drivers demanded strict action from the administration against unauthorized toto operations, warning that city auto services will remain suspended indefinitely if their demands are not met.
