BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh took to the streets against felling of trees for ‘food lane’ in Siliguri

Siliguri, 13th March: Siliguri MLA and BJP leader Shankar Ghosh took to the streets in protest against felling of trees for setting up of ‘food lane’. It is to be noted that the construction work of food lane on both sides of SF Road is set to commence. However, the cutting of several aged trees for the development has put the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) under the scanner as environmental organizations and city dwellers are enraged.

Reportedly, on Wednesday, MLA Shankar Ghosh carried out a silent protest march with placards on SF Road. In addition, boards were placed under every tree that was cut. During this, the MLA questioned the role of the forest department on the cutting of trees.

The MLA stated that many a times development compels for a compromise, however the road is neither a National highway nor an Asian highway. Food lanes could be made without cutting trees. He added that he would approach the court regarding the matter.
