Bird smuggler arrested in Siliguri, 27 parrots rescued

Siliguri, 09th February: Based on a tip-off, 27 parrots have been rescued from the Noukaghat area of Siliguri before smuggling. A youth has been arrested in the said incident. 


The accused has been identified as Gopal Kundu, a resident of the Bhujiapani area under the Bagdogra police station. Reportedly, Gopal Kundu used to bring birds from different forests and used to smuggle them in cages and into the surrounding areas including Siliguri. On Thursday, acting on a tip-off, the forest workers of the Dabgram range of Baikunthpur division arrested the main smuggler Gopal Kundu by conducting an operation in the Noukaghat area. 

Parrots were being smuggled in market bags. Apart from this, many more birds were rescued by raiding the house of the accused. According to the Forest Department, the birds will be released into the forest after treatment.
