Bengal CM sparks speculation of lockdown extension, State’s total number of active cases rise to 71

Kolkata, 08th April: Addressing the media at Nabanna, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the lockdown is needed to prevent the spread of coronavirus. This statement sparked speculation of lockdown extension, however, no confirmation has been announced yet.


Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with leaders of all parties via video conferencing, on the COVID-19 situation in the country. The PM stated that the situation in the country is similar to a ‘social emergency’ due to which tough decisions must be made and all should continue to remain vigilant to combat the pandemic. 

Banerjee informed that 69 people, who had attended the event (at Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi) from Bengal, have been kept in quarantine. “State Health Ministry directly monitoring the situation,” she further added. Banerjee also said that the active cases in the state stand at 71.
