Rajganj, 18th March: One person lost his life while three others were severely injured in a head-on collision between a stone-laden truck and freight truck, on Thursday morning. The incident surfaced from the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri National Highway in the Panikouri area adjacent to Rajganj’s Fatapukur. The deceased has been identified as Tapas Saha and the injured as Prahlad Roy, Sanjay Saha, and Nilu Saha.
According to local sources, the drivers face difficulties plying through the four-lane national highway at Panikauri More as there is no crossing. As a result, they tend to travel through another four-lane highway. This apparently leads to frequent road accidents in the area.
The victims of today’s accident were rescued and taken to Rajganj Rural Hospital and later shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. After the incident, the locals staged a road blockade demanding a crossing at Panikauri More.
Upon receiving the news, Rajganj BDO NC Sherpa and IC of Rajganj Police Station Pankaj Sarkar rushed to the spot. The blockade was lifted after the administration assured them of meeting their demands soon. Police have started an investigation into the whole incident. Meanwhile, the driver and assistant driver of the freight truck are absconding since the incident.
