Siliguri, 11th July: Government Railway Police (GRP) seized around 7.5 kg of cannabis from the AC Two-Tier coach of the down Saraighat Express at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station and arrested one person in connection with the case. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around ₹1 lakh.
According to GRP sources, police had received prior information that cannabis was being smuggled through the AC Two-Tier coach of the Saraighat Express. Acting on the information, a GRP team was deployed at NJP Railway Station and waited for the train’s arrival.
As soon as the train reached the railway station, plainclothes GRP personnel launched a search operation inside the AC Two-Tier coach. During the operation, a suspect identified as Kailash Roy, a resident of Jalpaiguri district, was detained.
During questioning, it was learnt that the accused had boarded the train from Dhupguri Railway Station and was travelling to Howrah. A search of his luggage led to the recovery of approximately 7.5 kg of cannabis.
A case has been registered against the accused under the NDPS Act. He was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Saturday with a prayer for police remand. Further investigation is underway.
