Youth arrested with brown sugar near Asian Highway in Naxalbari; major drug smuggling bid foiled

Naxalbari, 21st May: The Naxalbari Police have foiled a major drug smuggling attempt and arrested a youth with a large quantity of brown sugar near Khalpara More on the Asian Highway.

According to police sources, the accused had arrived in Naxalbari from Murshidabad district carrying narcotics with the intention of delivery in the area. Acting on suspicion, police stopped and questioned the youth. During interrogation, inconsistencies were found in his statements, following which his school bag was searched.

During the search, police recovered brown sugar concealed inside three plastic tiffin boxes. A total of around 310 grams of brown sugar was seized, with an estimated illegal market value of around ₹30 lakh.

The arrested youth has been identified as Biswajit Pramanik, a resident of Sahabazpur in Murshidabad district. He had reportedly travelled from Jangipur by bus to Naxalbari for the delivery.

The accused has been taken to Naxalbari Police Station and is likely to be produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court. Police will seek remand for further investigation into the network involved.
