Siliguri, 14th August: West Bengal Minister of State for Law Biraj Biswas and Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh visited the Siliguri court premises on Friday and met members of the Bar Association and other advocates.
The ministers also toured the court complex and interacted with lawyers about various issues faced by them. The long-pending demand for a new court building was among the key issues discussed during the visit.
The legal fraternity has been demanding a new court building in Siliguri for several years. Although the design for the proposed building has reportedly been prepared, construction work has not yet begun. As a result, lawyers, law clerks and members of the public face various difficulties at the existing court premises on a daily basis.
Lawyers raised the issue with both ministers and sought an early start to the construction work. MoS Biraj Biswas assured them that work on the new court building would be expedited.
Biswas also alleged that the project had been kept pending during the previous Trinamool Congress government.
During the visit, the ministers also handed over national flags to lawyers at the court premises.
